Modulus
Because there is a material-specific relationship
between the speed of sound, porosity and modulus of elasticity,
ultrasonic testing can be used to determine the elastic modulus
non-destructively. This method is suitable for finding small
faults in the ceramic material. This does, however, require
the ultrasonic instrumentation to be of high quality. To provide
an indication of a 100 µm fault, a frequency of 100
MHz, tightly focusing test heads and instrumentation amplifiers
are all required.
