7.3.2 Component Costs in Mass Production

The costs involved in mass production depend heavily on the manufacturing steps that are technically necessary and on the degree of automation, which in turn depends on the batch size. Recent developments, for instance, are demonstrating significant progress in hard machining, achieving a similar cost basis as that of metal machining. High performance ceramics also offer significant cost optimisation to the advantage of the user.
